Bottoms Up!

So today in our group meeting we heard some hard truths about the product we want to develop. At this point it was tempting to spriiiiiiiinnnnttt!!!!!! Get on a plane and never come back. Ok so clearly we had missed something! And something big! We had failed to actually listen to what people are interested in. but thankfully for us, we’ve learnt that we have the best advisors on board – you!
When a product, service or anything along those lines fail. We’ve been encourages to keep
working at it. But working at something rarely goes well, if you’re not doing it the right way.
What we needed to do was actually just find out from our customers how we can make our
product suite their needs. This is called the bottom up upproach – where we go to the
market first and find out what they need instead of making a product and hoping for the
best! (Top-Down Approach). Steve jobs famously quoted…
“Some people say, ‘Give the customers what they want.’ But that’s not my approach. Our
job is to figure out what they’re going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said,
‘if I’d asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, ‘A faster horse!’’
People don’t know what they want until you show it to them.
But maybe he just knew what knew what the market actually needed. He had been in the
industry long enough to know his market. Also the frequent release of apple products like
the iPhone, iPad and iPod means that they are actually always adapting their products to
what their consumers need. So spriiiiiiinnnnnt but in the right way! It’s worth going out
there and finding out that your target group actually need. We that’s certainly the direction
we will need to be working toward.
So consider this, when you approach an issue, consider if you are approaching it, maybe if
you flip it over, you may find, that it becomes a whole lot easier.
