My name is Paul Lassen. I have opened my blog entry week with two poems that I feel can portray my personality far better than I can in words. The poems will help you to understand what my intention and purpose is in this course and for the rest of my life.
In the poem, Ozymandias, Rameses II, referred to as Ozymandias in the poem, gloats to the world of his accomplishments and the wonders he has built. The last two lines show how all his achievements were forgotten and his legacy was lost after he died. We today obviously preserve his history, but the poem is portraying how you can accomplish amazing feats in your life, but unless you made a different to people’s lives, you will be forgotten after you die.
This is one of my greatest fears. When I die, what legacy will I leave behind? How will people remember me by? It is this fear that drives me in my everyday life to make sure that I build and accomplish enough, in my short stint on this world, that I shall be remembered.
The second poem speaks about how choosing to make decisions that are different or against the norms of society can have the greatest impacts on our lives. I prefer to live my life my way and for that reason I can be somewhat of an anti-conformist in certain aspects. I like to consider myself different also. Different people are the people that have changed the world. They are the people who have made an impact on this world which will be recorded in the history books for eternity. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Henry Ford, Leonardo Da Vinci and Charles Darwin. All out spoke, laughed at and criticised for their dreams and their life’s works. But today Apple is the biggest company in the world, Microsoft has the most used operating system, we drive in cars every day, we make use of inventions and concepts Da Vinci draw up and Evolution is the accepted theory of how man came to be.
Ask yourself if you are taking the road less travelled by.
Ask yourself how what you do today will impact your legacy you hope to leave behind.
If you are going with the flow and doing things that will not contribute to your legacy, you will never be remembered and you will never achieve your dreams.
